Research Training Course
Karachi– Pak Dental Community successfully organized a five session Research training Seminar throughout the month of May at the Central Mess NORE 1. The seminar drew participants from different dental schools of Karachi providing opportunity to enhance learning experience under the mentorship of experienced instructors.
In a field with continuous innovations, high quality research is imperative. Interactive training methods focusing on research concepts with tools and development methods are necessary for shared intellectual learning experience. PDC designed the sessions in progression from understanding research basics to carrying out individual research projects.
Introductory session was conducted on May 3rd by Dr. Syed Muhammad Faizan. The lecture focused on understanding the role, scope and importance of research in the field. Dr. Faizan discussed how research findings can positively impact our field and health status and gave an overview to the proceeding sessions.
Second session conducted on 10th May comprised of two sessions; first on “Basic epidemiology” by Dr. Asher Afaq Vice principal Dow International Dental College Karachi. Dr. Asher covered the principles, concepts, procedures and applications of epidemiology for conducting a research. Following one hour lunch break Dr. Saima Butt Assistant professor department of Oral pathology Ziauddin University, delivered a lecture on “Research Methodology”, in which she taught the participants on how ones approach, research design and research question are interlinked. Among the topics discussed orientation of research, how to frame the research question, skills and ability to collect data and feasibility of conducting a research were discussed in great detail.
May 17th, Dr. Kulsoom Rizvi Head of Department Community dentistry BUM&DC took the third session on “Critical Appraisal” and discussed the systematic assessment of a research to determine its value and relevance together with finding the strengths and weaknesses of a research. Evaluation whether the study design is appropriate for the research question and assessment of the methodology were also discussed. Dr. Kulsoom stressed on the need to develop critical appraisal skills for identification of high-quality researches.
Fourth session was conducted by Dr. Sidra Mohiuddin Assistant Professor Ziauddin University, on May 24th on “Basic Biostatistics”. The lecture focused on the tools and techniques to collect data followed by its analysis, summary and interpretation. Sampling techniques of the representative population, data analysis, hypothesis testing and making inferences from the results on the population were taught to the participants.
The research training course concluded on 31st of May with a hands-on session on “SPSS for Health Professionals” conducted by Dr. Hasan Mehdi, Head of department of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery Fatima Jinnah Dental College. For researchers to carry out their statistical analysis during the course of their research, a basic knowledge of the statistical software like SPSS is required. The participants practiced data entry and application of different tools and tests to formulate results.
All the course instructors were presented with shields of appreciation by Dr. Saima Butt. The participants of the course were awarded certificates on successful completion of the research training course.
PDC’s research Training workshop aimed to fill the growing gap in research training for undergraduate and post graduate students. In order to cope up with the international research standards there is a dire need to develop research culture in our country and such workshops provide great opportunity for students to build research networks together with refining skills and building confidence to carry out high quality researches.
